From the New York Times, we have a juicy little administration faux-pas:
Oopsie! In what has to be one of the least-shocking outcomes of Barack Obama’s Libyan adventure, the New York Times reports that his administration secretly gave approval of weapons shipments to Libyan resistance fighters, only to learn that the weapons ended up arming Islamist terror networks. Who could have seen that coming, right?
A friend wrote this to me:
You know, I’m amazed at the jaw-dropping naiveté displayed here. It’s as if the entire administration has the idea that all one has to do is get rid of one dictator and that democracy instantly follows. Indeed, it’s not just THIS administration. It’s been going on a long time. Lenin, Stalin, Mussolini, Castro, Putin, were all at one time or another expected to deliver democracy to the grateful masses
It is a good point, though. None of those you mentioned actually talked much about Democracy; all they had to do is convince the Americans that, deep in their heart, they were Democrats. It didn’t take much; we wanted to believe them, and couldn’t imagine someone wanting anything else.
Somehow, someway in ways that I really can’t articulate, I find that naivete charming…we are not hard-nosed, cynical real-political asshats like the Europeans. We believe in the perfectability of the human condition, and strive to make it happen…and, really, I think we are having an effect.
But I think it is becoming obvious that there really aren’t many good guys out there…and that the only way to change the world is to either take over each of these despotic black holes and remake them ourselves…
The fact is, you cannot have a Democracy without an educated middle class…and you can’t GET to the middle class part when the government is siphoning off all the revenue it can to hoard it in Swiss bank accounts…so there you are…we CAN make Democracy, but we can’t afford it…we need to rethink this business
